Bio Design: Jewelry Crafted from Microbes – A Fusion of Eastern Art and Sustainable Innovation

Where Microbes Meet Art – A Groundbreaking Collaboration

· PHA 3D Printing

In the world of sustainable fashion and bio-design, innovation often lies at the intersection of nature, art, and technology. Today, we’re excited to share a groundbreaking collaboration that brings together traditional Eastern aesthetics and cutting-edge eco-friendly materials: PHA ECO GOODS x LEPOON (黎磐) – a jewelry collection made from microbial-based PHA, where Chinese freehand art meets sustainable innovation 💍.

PHA ECO GOODS x Li Pan: A Partnership Rooted in Sustainability & Art

This marks the second collaboration between PHA ECO GOODS and LEPOON, a partnership rooted in a shared vision: to reimagine what jewelry can be, beyond beauty and luxury, and towards a future where art coexists harmoniously with the planet. For this collection, BIROMA provided PHA sheets with ink-wash texture – a unique material that serves as the perfect canvas for LEPOON’s design vision. The result? A stunning fusion of traditional Eastern freehand art and PHA, a sustainable bio-based material that redefines the boundaries of eco-conscious jewelry.

Inspiration Behind the Collection: Beijing, London, and Cross-Cultural Harmony

Every great design starts with inspiration, and this collection draws its soul from two iconic cities: Beijing and London 🏛️🌆. These two historically rich, culturally profound sister cities are more than just geographic locations – they are the heartbeat of the collection. The story begins with the meeting of LEPOON’s two designers in Beijing, a city steeped in thousands of years of Eastern history, where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern energy. Later, their academic journey in London – a global hub of art, design, and innovation – added a unique Western perspective to their creative process.

Rooted in the lifestyles, histories, and urban rhythms of both cities, the designers delved deep into their distinct cultural heritages, seeking to capture the essence of each place in their work. Their goal was not to simply combine two cultures, but to create a harmonious symbiosis – a “beautiful cross-cultural dialogue” that transcends boundaries. In every piece of jewelry, you can feel the quiet elegance of Beijing’s imperial history and the dynamic creativity of London’s contemporary art scene, woven together into a single, cohesive vision.

Design Inspiration: Blending Chinese Landscape Paintings with PHA

To bring this vision to life, the designers turned to a timeless source of Eastern inspiration: Chinese landscape paintings 🎨🖌️. Drawing from works spanning from the Song Dynasty to modern times – a period of over 1,000 years of artistic evolution – they selected three representative styles to test and refine the PHA material, ultimately using it to present geometric patterns inspired by city maps (a nod to Beijing and London’s urban context).

The Design Process: Translating Traditional Ink-Wash Techniques to PHA

The design process was a labor of love, blending traditional techniques with modern material innovation. First, starting from realistic landscape imagery, the designers adopted the “layered ink-wash” technique (ji mo) – a classic Chinese painting method that uses bold black ink gradients and intentional blank spaces (liubai) to convey both the weight and vitality of mountains. This technique, which has been cherished for centuries, finds new life on PHA sheets, as the material’s unique texture enhances the depth and richness of the ink-like hues.

Next, the team experimented with the “dot-rendering” technique (dian ran) of Chinese ink painting, a delicate method that uses small dots of ink to add texture, depth, and emotion to a piece. Translating this onto PHA required careful precision – the material’s smooth, glossy surface allowed the designers to recreate the subtlety of brush strokes, capturing the ethereal “qi yun” (artistic spirit) of traditional ink wash art in a completely new medium.

Finally, inspired by modern splash-ink landscape style (po mo), the designers blended black mineral pigments into the PHA material, embracing the free-spirited, unrestrained energy of this contemporary take on traditional art. The result is a series of pieces that feel both bold and elegant, with swirling patterns that evoke the chaos and beauty of nature – a perfect metaphor for the fusion of cultures and materials at the heart of the collection.

PHA: The Sustainable Microbial Material at the Core

At the core of this collection is PHA – a material that is as innovative as it is sustainable 🌱. Short for Polyhydroxyalkanoate, PHA is a natural polymer produced by microbes – think of it as “microbial fat,” as we often describe it at PHA ECO GOODS. Unlike traditional plastic or synthetic materials used in jewelry, PHA is 100% bio-based and ocean-degradable, meaning it can break down naturally in the environment, becoming nutrients for microorganisms and supporting the planet’s ecological cycle.

The Lifecycle of PHA Jewelry: Beauty That Returns to Nature

What makes PHA truly special is its lifecycle: when a piece of jewelry reaches the end of its life, the PHA component gently decomposes, returning to the earth in harmony with nature 🌍. Meanwhile, the metals and diamonds used in the collection can be fully recycled and recreated, creating a closed-loop system that minimizes waste and maximizes sustainability. This is the future of fashion – a world where beauty doesn’t come at the expense of the planet, but instead contributes to its health and vitality.

More Than a Collection: A Statement on Art, Sustainability, and Cultural Fusion

This collaboration between PHA ECO GOODS and LEPOON is more than just a jewelry collection – it’s a statement. It’s a proof that sustainable materials and traditional art can coexist, that cultural fusion can create something truly extraordinary, and that fashion can be a force for good. Every piece tells a story: of two cities, two cultures, a timeless art form, and a material that’s kind to our planet.
